How To Keep Up With Social Media In A Fast Moving Landscape

Digital Performance

Keeping up with the ever changing landscape of social media can be exhausting.

Social media is fast paced these days, and to see results, you have to keep up. It also shows your audience that your brand is current and switched on, which is especially important if you have a younger audience.

Whilst you don’t have to jump on every trend and new feature, it is important to maintain a level of awareness of changes that happen and adjust the ways you use social media platforms accordingly.

There’s many ways you can do this, here’s what we recommend.

Stay In The Know

It may feel hard to keep up with, but the information is out there, you’ve just got to know where to find it.

Following relevant people and accounts on social media is a great place to start.Adam Mosseri, Head Of Instagram, regularly shares changes happening on the platform from his own page @mosseri. Instagram also has a page dedicated for creators, @creators, sharing latest trends and tips for navigating the app.

Facebook and LinkedIn are valuable for groups and networking as a way to stay updated.

You can also read social news platforms, subscribe to newsletters, watch tailored YouTube videos and listen to podcasts as a way to find the latest news!

Observe Trends…

But don’t feel the need to jump on all of them! There’s a new trend on social media every week these days so don’t stress yourself out trying to replicate all of them. They can be a great way to gain traction, but not every single one will be relevant to you or your business.

So, how do you go about finding current trends? Scrolling your own feed and your explore or for you page is genuinely the best way to discover new trends. You can also look at audios and which ones are listed as most popular. Try to jump on them early though in order for your content to get more reach as the trend grows.

In terms of deciding which trends you should follow, think about who your audience are and what they’ll want to see. The algorithm will push them more of what they engage with so consider their interests and the type of content that will catch their eye.

Also think about the type of business that you are and how you want to come across but remember, social media isn’t one size fits all. Some corporate brands may be against engaging in silly or humorous content while others may find that it humanises their brand and helps them stand out from the crowd.

Be Aware Of Your Competitors

Original and unique content is always best on social media, but there’s no harm in keeping an eye on what your competitors are doing and what’s working well for them.

If you have similar audiences, it’s likely that there’ll be similarities between your content anyway. Take note of what hashtags they use, what their engagement and comments look like and also something they’re not doing which you could be doing to fill the gap for your audiences.

Test Out What Works For YOU

Social media is essentially one big experiment. As mentioned earlier, it’s not a one size fits all. What works for someone else may not work for you so testing and experimenting is essential.

If you think a trend is funny and you can make it relevant for your business, try it out and see how your audience responds. Try out different formats – static images, informative carousels, reels – and see which receives the most engagement. It’s also worth testing the different times you’re posting as it may not be that your audience didn’t like it, they may have just missed it. The algorithm should push the right content to the right people however so make sure you pay attention to what is being favoured currently and adapt to that.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and test but if something is working for you, don’t feel pressure to change it. Just remember that different platforms have different purposes and features so utilise each one accordingly.

Monitor Platform Analytics

Every social media platform has its own analytics, so use them! This data is what’s really going to help you analyse what’s working and curate your perfect strategy.

If a particular style of post performs well, make a note and do more of that.

Create a spreadsheet or use a tool to help you keep a good overview of how each channel is performing so you know when it’s time to switch it up.

Hire An Agency

Social media can be a full time job. If you don’t have the resource in house but are wanting to put more effort into your social media pages, have you considered outsourcing the work?

Hiring an external marketing agency to manage your social media can take some of the weight off your team, ensure you have a proper social media strategy and maintain your presence online.

Bear in mind that you will still need to cooperate with sending content, approving posts and sharing business updates so make sure you have someone on your team that can assist with this!

Following these steps will help you stay ahead of the curve and develop a strong social media strategy to maintain a positive presence online.
